This resonated deeply with me even though I don’t have mental health issues. But I do know family and close friends who struggle…who doesn’t? Being on the outside and looking in on the problem it made less and less sense to me to put all the blame on the individual. People with mental health issues are strong and beautiful and more resilient than the rest of us can imagine. Many of our cultural systems make no sense. They are degrading and dehumanizing and do not care about those whom they pretend to serve. The crisis of rising teen suicide is a testimony to the fact that the environments we have chosen as a culture are toxic and mentally destructive. Yet the overall cultural response is to blame the child or parents or teachers or friends of the kid. It is never, wait a minute, why does our culture make children want to kill themselves? I guess all we can do is take care of our own, but we do need so much more. We need a cultural shift.
