Homework is Not a Chore

I’m sorry guys. I know some parents really want to believe that homework is a kids job. Therefore, more important than any household chores. And since kids are so busy these days, what with trying to be experts and well-rounded all at the same time, there is no time for chores.

So the dutiful parent just does it all for the kid.

But chores are life.

Life is chores. Or rather, if you can’t cook and clean, won’t you feel horribly incompetent when you grow-up? Even if you can perform a mean calculus operation, lack of basic abilities in the area of life skills will leave you feeling deflated and stupid.

What’s more, because your kid never learned how to work, because homework is not the same as manual labor, they won’t know they can just start where they are and keep practicing and they will get better.

Or, maybe, they will know that, maybe math taught them that. Maybe math can cook that chicken for them, or maybe not.

The thing is, learning is not a job.

Learning is what rich people do when they have the time. Learning is what poor people do when they want more out of life. Learning is a privilege. It might also be a right. But it…
