Signs of Mommy Martyrdom and How to Stop It.

You might be a mommy martyr if you can’t remember what it is you like to do in your spare time.

That is ridiculous, you say. Moms don’t have spare time, free time, or me-time.

Yes, I know. I’ve got six kids and have had them for a while. The thing is, whether spare time exists or not, I need to carve out moments to do the things I love. The things that feed me. The things that give me energy and joy.

Sure, my kids give me joy, but that is not their job. Relying on anyone else to give you the joy you need places an unfair burden on them. Kids should never have to shoulder such a heavy load.

No, your joy is your job.

You might be a mommy martyr if you are constantly crying, yelling, screaming, whining, or giving into passive-aggressive behaviors.

You do these things because you are doing all the work. Mommy martyrs don’t expect or ask their family to share in the menial tasks of everyday living.

They think taking on all this work is a service to their families. But in doing so they take away the ability of their family to serve them…
